  1. Meaningful URLs

It would be great if you were able to select a meaningful URL for each readings lists (in the same way you can when posting via Wordpress, etc.) Currently the meaningless string of characters make Analytics reports hard to digest. It would also be great if academics could hand out a short, simple URL. Something along the lines of uni.readinglists.ac.uk/ENXXXX

The URLS need to maintain uniqueness. This could be lost if we attempt to make combinations of module code/title/time period etc. We could potentially end up with even longer URLS.

This idea has been declined and moved to the archive.

  2. Multiple catalogues on Talis

In addition to being able to access our library services, students at our university have access to another major collection which has its own separate catalogue.
We're always trying to promote this facility and it would make a huge difference if we could link multiple catalogues into Talis so users could see what resources were available to them via this service

We will not be focusing on this due to low votes. Whilst this idea appears to be highly voted, it was only voted on by 7 institutions with some disproportionate voting. the votes were averaged across voting institutions.

This idea has been declined and moved to the archive.

  3. Ability to edit the 404 message to display local contact details

We are linking to our Talis Aspire reading lists from our online module catalogue. Because this is an automatic process and may be updated before we have added a module to the hierarchy, there is the potential for the online module catalogue to provide links to modules that are not included in the hierarchy and thus for users to come across a 404 Page Not Found message. It would be useful at this point to be able to direct users to contact an appropriate member of staff who can look into the situation and add a module as necessary to…

  4. Make the ‘Preview’ button a different colour to the ‘Online resource’ button.

Can the ‘Preview’ button be made a different colour to the ‘Online resource’ button? We’re finding that some of our students see the two ‘blue’ buttons as interchangeable, and are disappointed when clicking them doesn’t always take them to the full text. Having the ‘Preview’ button a different colour will help to avoid this confusion.

  5. Allow libraries to customise the text used on links and buttons in their tenancy

It would help our users if they saw the same language used in our Talis Aspire tenancy that we use in other systems (resource discovery, etc.)

To that end I'd like to be able to customise text labels and buttons at a tenancy level, changing the text so that it matches what we use elsewhere. Examples:

    "Online Resource"
    "Access the eBook"

  6. Local management of Aspire auto-emails

Aspire sends various emails automatically and we have no control over them and often no knowledge that they go out (we discovered the List Owner one late after making a staff member a list owner).

We need the ability to customise the emails (from, reply-to, subject, and body) and enable or disable them (globally with an override at each trigger event).

They are currently seen as library spam by many academics and we are merely annoying them.

  7. Allow editing of "Sorry there are no lists"

When you go to a module page that has no list, there is a big message saying "Sorry, there are no lists here yet. You could try" We need to be able to edit this as the two tips are not relevant to us. (Furthermore, sometimes a module deliberately doesn't have a list and we need to make this clear. If we add a description to the module, no-one will read it because the "Sorry" message is much bigger, so we're having to add a dummy list too.) Thanks.

  8. Library side importance level

We're trying to use the importance level on items as a way to streamline out essential collection. If items are listed as student purchase or essential they are added to a shorter loan period.

We've found that staff like to retain the granularity of the importance levels in recommending resources to students but occasionally still want more items added to the essential collection.

Idea is just for another drop down on for academics to specify to the library the loan periods they feel is appropriate.

  9. Mouse rollover on the importance settings

We would like the option to add a mouse rollover/popup describing each of our importance settings to academics creating lists, to help implement our purchasing policy.

The importance fields are customisable for each university and have a different meaning for each. With this in mind to configure this would involve a different setup for each uni. Uni’s also use the importances in different ways, some use for ordering purposes while others use to guide student reading. With this level of complexity we are going to decline this idea but will continue to listen and see if others raise ideas in this area.

  10. Replace Amazon button with Copac button

We would be interested in exploring the idea of having a button that links through to a book's copac record.

At king's we often recommend that students visit other libraries in London to find books we may not necessarily hold ourselves.

This button could replace the buy from amazon button (which has attracted some criticism at King's) or sit elsewhere on a resource's record.

Provide a report that shows all existing time periods along with their data: name, slug, start/end time.

  12. Allow custom styling (CSS)

A text field for institutions that are confident with design and would like to tweak colors, fonts etc to keep the aspire system in line with either VLE interface or branding.

Allows incremental tweaks and experimentation and avoids bugging Talis support

Intended for simple changes, checkbox to turn on/off.

  13. Allow customisation of fields shown in availability section

The availability section shows "collection", "shelfmark", and "availability", and fields are automatically assigned to each of these headings.

However, different LMSs and different sites' usage of them will mean they use fields in various ways, so my suggestion is giving users a way to configure which field goes to which column.

In our case, we're a single site and the "library" field for all items is UXBRIDGE. This is the field shown under "collection" but is the same for 99% of items so we'd prefer "location" to be used here (which is in brackets in the availability column)... but I'm…

  14. remove Amazon button

I've just agreed to trial Talis Aspire, but will not be using it until the Amazon button is removed. Universities are public sector institutions, and we should not support tax-avoiding corporations like Amazon by incorporating them into our modules like this.

  15. Allow editing of "Sorry there are no lists"

There was a previous Idea for this that only got 13 votes (http://ideas.talisaspire.com/forums/32805-talis-aspire-ideas-archive/suggestions/2051419-allow-editing-of-sorry-there-are-no-lists-)

But the same problem still exists. Basically we'd like control over that text so we can make it more specific.

  16. Embed COinS metadata in item record pages

If item and list pages were marked up to include COinS metadata embedded within the page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COinS), then users could grab the item metadata directly into web-enabled referencing/bibliographic software such as Zotero.

  17. Ability to prioritise/categorize reading lists per module using colour or an icon.

Message from the lecturer who suggested this is below:

"I would like the ability to prioritise/catagorize my reading lists per module.

For example, in one of my modules I have multiple lists. One is the actual reading list for the module and the rest are supporting lists that list resources such as multimedia and software tools. These resources are put into seperate lists as they are relevent to multiple modules, so a seperate list is the ideal method of achieving this. However, I notice that it's not very clear which list is the core/primary/main list for a module.

    I would…

  18. Customisable Reading Intentions

We would like to be able to rename the reading intentions students can select for each bookmark. We currently use "Will read", "Reading now", "Have read" and "Won't read". However an academic recently said that some of these (particularly "Won't read") could be reworded in a more positive way, such as "Student recommended".
Some text in Aspire Reading Lists is already customisable; I know the text for review outcomes can already be changed by Talis, so this would be a similar development.

  20. Reading List block falling down the Moodle sidebar on rollover.

One of my colleagues has a sneaking suspicion that when modules roll over in Moodle, the reading list 'sticky' block floats down to the bottom of the side bar.

She can fix this manually while she is processing reading lists, but she think this will be a real annoyance if it goes on year after year. Is there anything at the Aspire end that could be done to make sure the position of the block doesn't change, or is this a Moodle issue?

It seems the blocks are copied from the original course and the default setting for any new…

    Hi Sandra,

I’m removing this from the ideas forum because in the first instance I think we should investigate it as a support ticket. I’ve rasied it on your behalf and Tim will look into this when he is back from leave as part of the support issues (https://talisaspire.zendesk.com/agent/#/tickets/4257). It may very well end up back here in ideas, but I’d like us to take a look first.

    Regards,

    Keji
