  1. How items display in lists

We'd like items in lists to display author first rather than by title which is how they currently display. Academics often refer to reading in the following terms "Read Smith chapters 2 & 3" it is then confusing for students who cannot browse a list to identify the book by Smith.
I appreciate this could vary across institutions, perhaps the ability to alter display settings locally would be useful?

This idea is not in our development focus. The search filter on a list enables users to find items on the list by title and author. This idea has been declined and moved to the archive.

  2. Classmarks and holdings information to display on the main list page

At the moment students need to click on each item in turn in order to get the classmark / holding information about books. It would be a huge benefit to students to be able to see that at a glance, by having Aspire display this information on the main list page.

Whilst we will be merging the list and item views, it will still require a click to view holdings information, as its not feasible to pre-load this for every item on a list, as it will affect performance

  3. Online resources to display in PDF of reading lists

With our move to using Talis as the sole source of reading lists at Middlesex, we will have to use the PDF function to print out reading lists for validations for new courses. It is a real shame therefore that this output does not show the Online Resource button.

We are always asked about e-resources, especially for Distance learning courses, so being able to print this information out in one go with out editing is really important in making the library look efficient.

Please can the pdf format be modified to include this?

    Thanks

  4. Change the 'Export' button to one that says 'Print'

At present if a student opens a list and then prints it without being signed in they get all the hyperlinks included in the list. However, if they have signed in and do this the hyperlinks are not there.

A much better route for them to take is using the 'Export' button as you don't need to be signed in to get a PDf that is clearer. But I don;t think this is immediately obvious.

I have attached a not very clear photo of what I mean, apologies as they were taken on my phone

This won’t cater for the other options available in that drop-dwon so we won’t be addressing this idea. However, we did make an improvement to the hyperlinks in the export some time ago

  5. option to display My Lists either as a full list or as pages

The recent change in the way My Lists is displayed (only showing a number of lists via pages, rather than showing the whole list) has speeded up how quickly the page loads, but then requires the user to scan several pages of lists. Would it be possible to offer the option to display the full list of My Lists on a single page as well as the multiple pages view.

We will not be focusing on this due to low votes. This idea has been declined and moved to the archive.

  6. Ability to sort contents of lists by author, date, etc

It would be useful to have a sort button on a list to enable the list creator and/or student to sort, in particular by author or date of publication. Also the ability to sort within the sections of a list would be useful.

Improvements to list view include more “group by” options and also the ability to filter using a keyword. This should greatly improve the ability to find items on the list. The introduction of a list bibliography means that lists can be displayed in a a selected citation style which is more appropriate to referencing.

  7. Metadata refresh at the List level, including a report to see before and after

We would like to see some enhancements to the Metadata Refresh function to allow a more controlled use of this function. At a global level, the ability to see a report of items that will be refreshed with the option of excluding certain items if required. Additionally, it would be very useful if there was an option to apply Metadata Refresh at the list level (to an individual list) again with the option to exclude certain items if required. Finally, a report listing the items that have been updated.

We will not be focusing on this due to low votes. This idea has been declined and moved to the archive. However, the dashboard allows metadata refresh (link to library copy) for items not linked to library copy.

  8. adding the option to set non-filing characters for items that start with A, An, The etc.

For the purposes of compiling reports, it would be useful if it were possible to classify non-filing characters at the beginning of item titles as in Marc Records. E.g. where the title begins with A, An, The

  9. Changing the name of the 'Link to Hierarchy' field to 'link to module(s)'.

When creating a list, changing the name of 'Link to Hierarchy' field to 'Link to module code(s)' would be a better name and easier to understand. Could we this be changed please?

After reviewing we are declining this idea as hierarchy does cover all terminology for all universities. We have found each universities refers to modules, units etc differently so leaving as hierarchy prevents confusion.

  10. Passive entries

We would like the ability to add a "passive entry " to a list, for example an entry for an item which is not in stock but will be considered for purchase.
The entry would be hidden from view and then published when the item was found or purchased etc
There was previous idea which was rejected due to lack of votes but I wonder if other users might consider this to be a useful feature.

  11. Adding Author, Publisher and Publiction Date Fields to the 'Export to CSV' Facility

Significant sections of our user base would like a quick and convenient method to download and manipulate basic bibliographic information from lists without recourse to complicated reference management packages.

This can easily be achieved by adding the following fields to the 'Export to CSV' facility: Author, Publisher, Publication Date.

  12. Developing the 'My Notes' section used by students

As you know a student can log in and make their own notes on their reading list(s). But, at present, there no way they can export this information once they want to write their essays or finish their studies (apart from copying and pasting into another document). It would be helpful if they could get all their notes together in one report for when they need them. This is bearing in mind a student could have 50+ notes for one reading list.

Students are able to see all their notes and reading intentions in their profile with links back to the lists.

We are going to decline this idea due to the low number of votes and the length of time this idea has been open with no further interest.

If this is still an area you would like to see further enhancements made please do raise again.

  13. Students being able to tell if a book appears on multiple Lists

When clicking through to an item record within a List there is no indication when an item appears on multiple lists.

Feedback from course organisers and students has been that the would like to be able to identify when an item is used on multiple lists and in progressive courses to assist in making informed purchasing decisions.

  14. Usability of interface

We would like to see improvements to the usability of the ASPIRE interface.
1 Use of keyboard short cuts for common actions, eg edit, review, moving within a list
    2. The ability to search across a list when displayed on screen rather than relying on the search function in the web browser

  15. Change the typography size and format

As we find the current typography i.e. size / format / color of various sections, notes and titles on the lists and items to be off-putting, unwieldy, disproportionate (in places) we would like there to be an option to customize this or change it back to the previous appearance.

  16. Give the option to switch off the "read status" and "add note" buttons

We would like there to be a way to switch off the "read status" and "add note" buttons from appearing on the list outline page when users are not logged in.

  17. Flagging of lists under review

When a published list is under review, the list should be flagged as such in Aspire, otherwise the user may think it's the official final version. The wording of the "this list is under review" would be configurable by the customer.

(We often publish the list before reviewing it to keep procedures more accurate and to ensure users can see something in case we have a backlog of reviews. But we really need the flag to be there so users can see that it's the provisional list and they should check before purchasing items, for example.)

  18. Open URL link

It is confusing for students to be be presented with 2 links when accessing electronic resources. Currently, the "OpenURL" is listed first, with the "Web address" link listed below. It is not intuitive what the difference is, and as such most students will click on the first link. They then get frustrated, because the link doesn't take them directly to the article. We would prefer the web address to be listed first
