Display of chapters
When we add specific chapters to lists we'd like the title of the book as well as the title of the chapter to be automatically included in the display. We currently manually edit entries to include both, for example.
The Reformation Parliament, IN: Parliament and politics in Scotland, 1235-1560 - K. M. Brown
This think would make it easier for students to identify the chapter when browsing a list

This is now available in the new list view.
If you would like to see further enhancements please raise a new idea.

Has this issue been resolved in the new List View?
I've given it a cursory glance on a test page, and it looks like it to me. It's an important development, affecting lots of tenancies - I think we should be told.... *crosses fingers* -

This has had status 'planned' for more than a year now. Any update?

I'm glad to see this is at the top of the ideas list as it is a bit of a headache for us at Surrey too. We use the 'has part (chapter)' function but it's difficult to choose the best way to display the relevant information on the main reading list screen without it looking clunky or confusing, especially when the chapter author differs from the book's editor. It all becomes clear once the bookmark is clicked on, but the list is the first screen the students will see and it needs to be obvious what the set reading is from there. Please prioritise!

When is this improvement planned to take place? An academic here has asked for this to be implemented.

I agree that the way chapters are currently displayed isn't the best. In particular, if a chapter is available electronically it can be accessed via the "Online resource" button without information about the book it's from ever being displayed. It can also be a bit uninformative if the chapter title isn't very descriptive (e.g. "Introduction" - introduction to what, exactly?).
Adding information to the chapter title is a workaround that we sometimes use, but that's not ideal either. It means time is wasted duplicating information which already exists. It also means diverging from the information the title field is meant to contain, which can be a problem if you ever want to use that field in a different context. Renee mentioned the bibliography view, but it can also mess up your citations if you export to .ris, for example.

This relates to a suggestion from March 2014:

When we add a chapter :
we add the book via the bookmarket
then click Add Field: Has Part
Fill in chapter title, pages and possibly author
(Why is there no Chapter Number option???)When students view the list all they see is the chapter title. Doesn't advise what book the chapter is from etc.
Don't want to add that information into the title as that impacts on the bibliography view
If you add the book details (and this is doubling up content) as a note it's still not clear, especailly as this doesn't sit directly below the title, it's below and next to the type (Chapter) and the importance
It would improve immensely if this displayed as the following:
Chapter Title - Chapter Author
FROM Book TItle - Book AuthorIt would also help if Notes were displayed on their own line.

This is an area where academics make the most comments. They want to see the citation as full as possible and even when you use the chapter is part of facility, the source information is a click down.

This is desperately needed, I think. We're using the workaround at the moment, but the longer we use this, the more work there will be to undo when the change is instituted. Making changes to the information that's displayed must surely be a pretty simple change, so we would be delighted if this was made in the next update.

Just to add to this, it would be useful for metadata reviews if you could revise how the LCN Lookup works around updating these. At the minute we quite often find the chapter information is overwritten with the book details and the 'is part of Book' section goes blank so we have to do it manually.

Yes, please - this would be very popular with us!

I think that some planned improvements to bookmarking especially around how chapters/articles are added will help with this.
There is a workaround currently in the system so that when an chapter is added to a book (or article added to a journal) as an "is part of", the system automatically adds the book title into the Chapter title so that it appears in the list as Chapter of Book Title. Are you aware of that?

Very good idea.
