  1. Meaningful URLs

It would be great if you were able to select a meaningful URL for each readings lists (in the same way you can when posting via Wordpress, etc.) Currently the meaningless string of characters make Analytics reports hard to digest. It would also be great if academics could hand out a short, simple URL. Something along the lines of uni.readinglists.ac.uk/ENXXXX

The URLS need to maintain uniqueness. This could be lost if we attempt to make combinations of module code/title/time period etc. We could potentially end up with even longer URLS.

This idea has been declined and moved to the archive.

  2. How items display in lists

We'd like items in lists to display author first rather than by title which is how they currently display. Academics often refer to reading in the following terms "Read Smith chapters 2 & 3" it is then confusing for students who cannot browse a list to identify the book by Smith.
I appreciate this could vary across institutions, perhaps the ability to alter display settings locally would be useful?

This idea is not in our development focus. The search filter on a list enables users to find items on the list by title and author. This idea has been declined and moved to the archive.

  3. Broken link checker

The facility to run a report which identified any broken links to external content in bookmarks would help ensure lists were kept up-to-date without the need for a lot of manual checking. Similar tools are a very useful feature of products such as LibGuides.

We cannot accurately check for broken links as we are not guaranteed to get behind login challenges which will exist for a lot of links.

We will not be focusing on this idea and it has been declined and moved to the archive.

  4. Add an alternative resource

Was used frequently in TL2 both by academic and library staff to provide information on alternative formats and editions.

There are no plans to address this idea in the near future due to other planned themes.

  5. Ability to edit/delete the log at review stage

It would be very useful if it was possible to edit/delete comments made in the log when reviewing a list instead of having to add an additional note to correct a former comment.

  6. Multiple catalogues on Talis

In addition to being able to access our library services, students at our university have access to another major collection which has its own separate catalogue.
We're always trying to promote this facility and it would make a huge difference if we could link multiple catalogues into Talis so users could see what resources were available to them via this service

We will not be focusing on this due to low votes. Whilst this idea appears to be highly voted, it was only voted on by 7 institutions with some disproportionate voting. the votes were averaged across voting institutions.

This idea has been declined and moved to the archive.

  7. Unpublish a list

It would be really useful to have an option for list editors to temporarily 'unpublish' their lists so that they are hidden from public view (any one searching for a list would get a "Sorry this list is temporarily unavailable" message). This would be helpful while lecturers are updating lists (and may not want the previous version visible), if a course is not running for a period of time and a number of other reasons.

  8. Do not create duplicate bookmarks

If you bookmark an item that already exists in your bookmark list, Aspire creates a new bookmark so you may end up with multiple bookmarks for the same item.

It would be better if Aspire informed you there was already a matching bookmark in your list. It could offer the choice of using the existing bookmark or creating a new one. If you chose to use the existing one this could be promoted up to the top of your bookmarks list.

There are no planned improvements to the bookmarking mechanism in the near term development focus.

This idea has been declined and moved to the archive.

  9. Copy function for bookmarks

It would be really useful if a 'copy' function could be included in the possible actions given in 'My Bookmark'.
Currently, if a list creator is using, for example, several chapters from the same work, or multiple volumes, they must create a fresh bookmark and edit it accordingly. Being able to copy existing bookmarks that have been edited to good metadata standards would be a massive timesaver.
I am aware that there is a semi-workaround for this involving duplicating a 'template' bookmark within the reading list, but this is not as simple and straightforward to explain or do as just…

  10. Add a bookmark to multiple lists in one go

Some academics have the same reading list for several modules - so they are basically copies for each module. It would be really useful if, at the bookmarking stage, a reference could be added to multiple lists in one go.

  11. Don't allow academics to add/delete items from reading lists whilst the list is being reviewed by acquisitions

Items appearing and disappearing on lists... we could easily end up buying things that are no longer required or missing essential items.

  12. Ability to edit the 404 message to display local contact details

We are linking to our Talis Aspire reading lists from our online module catalogue. Because this is an automatic process and may be updated before we have added a module to the hierarchy, there is the potential for the online module catalogue to provide links to modules that are not included in the hierarchy and thus for users to come across a 404 Page Not Found message. It would be useful at this point to be able to direct users to contact an appropriate member of staff who can look into the situation and add a module as necessary to…

  13. Classmarks and holdings information to display on the main list page

At the moment students need to click on each item in turn in order to get the classmark / holding information about books. It would be a huge benefit to students to be able to see that at a glance, by having Aspire display this information on the main list page.

Whilst we will be merging the list and item views, it will still require a click to view holdings information, as its not feasible to pre-load this for every item on a list, as it will affect performance

  14. Make the 'Buy from Amazon' more sublte

We are getting some negative feedback about the Amazon button on Talis Aspire - some academic colleagues feel that it is not appropriate for a University system to 'advertise' for a commercial organisation. Similar to the following idea, which was declined: http://ideas.talis.com/forums/32805-talis-aspire-reading-lists/suggestions/6704698-remove-amazon-button

Rather than get rid of the link to Amazon altogether, which I think is a benefit to users. I wonder could the wording be made more subtle. For example: 'More information from Amazon'. If the wording was changed in this way, and the pricing information was removed, I think it would be less overtly commercial and would sit…

The new list view has made the Amazon option far more subtle when viewing a list and we hope that will resolve the issue, we will monitor feedback and when moving to new list view if you still receive concerns please do raise the idea again.

It is also worth noting that there is the option to remove a bookstore now without losing the book jackets. Previously the bookstore fueled the book jackets but in new list view this is no longer the case. If you want to explore this further please do raise a support ticket: https://support.talis.com/hc/en-us

  15. Online resources to display in PDF of reading lists

With our move to using Talis as the sole source of reading lists at Middlesex, we will have to use the PDF function to print out reading lists for validations for new courses. It is a real shame therefore that this output does not show the Online Resource button.

We are always asked about e-resources, especially for Distance learning courses, so being able to print this information out in one go with out editing is really important in making the library look efficient.

Please can the pdf format be modified to include this?

    Thanks

    Adam

  16. Change the 'Export' button to one that says 'Print'

At present if a student opens a list and then prints it without being signed in they get all the hyperlinks included in the list. However, if they have signed in and do this the hyperlinks are not there.

A much better route for them to take is using the 'Export' button as you don't need to be signed in to get a PDf that is clearer. But I don;t think this is immediately obvious.

I have attached a not very clear photo of what I mean, apologies as they were taken on my phone

This won’t cater for the other options available in that drop-dwon so we won’t be addressing this idea. However, we did make an improvement to the hyperlinks in the export some time ago

  17. option to display My Lists either as a full list or as pages

The recent change in the way My Lists is displayed (only showing a number of lists via pages, rather than showing the whole list) has speeded up how quickly the page loads, but then requires the user to scan several pages of lists. Would it be possible to offer the option to display the full list of My Lists on a single page as well as the multiple pages view.

  18. Ability to sort contents of lists by author, date, etc

It would be useful to have a sort button on a list to enable the list creator and/or student to sort, in particular by author or date of publication. Also the ability to sort within the sections of a list would be useful.

Improvements to list view include more “group by” options and also the ability to filter using a keyword. This should greatly improve the ability to find items on the list. The introduction of a list bibliography means that lists can be displayed in a a selected citation style which is more appropriate to referencing.

  19. Library creation of academic user profiles

We think more academics would use the Dashboard feature and in doing so apprecaite the impact of the size and structutre of their list, if library staff could automatic create (and delete) user profiles for academics.

  20. Search and add resources from within list edit

An in-line search function for the local catalogue/resource discovery system, and an external source (e.g. Amazon, Worldcat, GoogleScholar etc.). A list creator would - from within the list edit screen, be able to search for the text they require, and drag it across from the returned results into the panel and/or their bookmarks.

This would improve the workflow immeasurably for staff creating new lists - the current bookmarking system is fine for the incremental "magpie" like collection of resources as you come across them, but falls flat when it comes to large scale buidling of lists from scratch (which most…
