  1. Local management of Aspire auto-emails

Aspire sends various emails automatically and we have no control over them and often no knowledge that they go out (we discovered the List Owner one late after making a staff member a list owner).

We need the ability to customise the emails (from, reply-to, subject, and body) and enable or disable them (globally with an override at each trigger event).

They are currently seen as library spam by many academics and we are merely annoying them.

We will not be focusing on this due to low votes. This idea has been declined and moved to the archive.

  2. Make the bookmarklet into an open FireFox add-on.

Replace the bookmarklet with an open FF add-on, in a smililar manner to libX. If this were to happen, small library systems teams could add simple configs / scripts that recognised the resources being browsed by the academic and then extract necessary urls, encode them or inset proxy domains however the local institution operates. Then we could push updated configs out the academics as a new version when they open their browser. This would give a little more freedom to Talis customers who have the ability to make developments so that librarians do not need to make manual entries into…

We will not be focusing on this now due to low votes in the 2012 ideas survey

  3. Allow editing of "Sorry there are no lists"

When you go to a module page that has no list, there is a big message saying "Sorry, there are no lists here yet. You could try" We need to be able to edit this as the two tips are not relevant to us. (Furthermore, sometimes a module deliberately doesn't have a list and we need to make this clear. If we add a description to the module, no-one will read it because the "Sorry" message is much bigger, so we're having to add a dummy list too.) Thanks.

  4. Making library review outcome comments visable in CSV

We would like to communicate list review outcomes not only to the owner of a list but to our Acquisitions team too, who would rather receive our purchase requests in Excel sheets. So, exporting the outcome to an Excel sheet is quite useful here. But the only problem is Last comment under Review Outcome (in which we plan to convey our requests to our Acquisitions team, such as number of copies to purchase, e-books or print, etc) does not appear when the review is exported to Excel.

We feel this could be managed by integrating your acquisitions process more deeply with Talis Aspire Reading Lists so that staff are accessing the information within the system. If you would like to explore your workflows more fully then please do raise a support ticket and we can arrange a call with you.

  5. Anchoring the Edit function

Is there a way to 'anchor' as it were the links at the top of electronic reading lists, in a similar way to how you can freeze panes within a spreadsheet so that you can still view column headings as you scroll down a long spreadsheet?

I'm talking specifically about 'freezing' the 'Edit' button (and presumably the other buttons next to them like 'Recent Changes', 'View Bibliography' etc) so that we can easily toggle between the student view and the editing view, or publish a list after checking a link without scrolling up and down lists that are often very…

The New list Edit allows the editing of a list, if you have edit rights you are automatically in the edit view of the list rather than going to a separate interface as you do currently. We are now getting feedback on working this way so we will see feedback on the new enhancements and if this remains an issue.

If the other areas remain an issue once you have access to the new list edit then please let us know.

  6. Passive entries

We would like the ability to add a "passive entry " to a list, for example an entry for an item which is not in stock but will be considered for purchase.
The entry would be hidden from view and then published when the item was found or purchased etc
There was previous idea which was rejected due to lack of votes but I wonder if other users might consider this to be a useful feature.

  7. Library side importance level

We're trying to use the importance level on items as a way to streamline out essential collection. If items are listed as student purchase or essential they are added to a shorter loan period.

We've found that staff like to retain the granularity of the importance levels in recommending resources to students but occasionally still want more items added to the essential collection.

Idea is just for another drop down on for academics to specify to the library the loan periods they feel is appropriate.

  8. Bookmarking documents and returning to the original search

Perhaps I am using the tool incorrectly.
When I bookmark a resource from a google or database search, there seems to be no obvious way to get back to the original search results apart from pressing the 'back' button 5 or 6 times - is there another way of doing this?
If not, could this be implemented?

We cannot return you to the original search results that led you to the resource you chose to bookmark i.e. if you do a google search, then click on a search result and navigate through several clicks to a resource you decide to bookmark, we cannot get you back to the search. We can only get you back to the page from which you initiated the bookmarking process

  9. Adding Author, Publisher and Publiction Date Fields to the 'Export to CSV' Facility

Significant sections of our user base would like a quick and convenient method to download and manipulate basic bibliographic information from lists without recourse to complicated reference management packages.

This can easily be achieved by adding the following fields to the 'Export to CSV' facility: Author, Publisher, Publication Date.

  10. Books not linked to library catalogue report

The 'Books not linked to library catalogue - beta' report is very useful, but I think it would be even more useful if it was possible to filter out books that link to an electronic version. These are not linked to the catalogue, so it would be good to filter them out so as to see the print books more easily.

  11. Developing the 'My Notes' section used by students

As you know a student can log in and make their own notes on their reading list(s). But, at present, there no way they can export this information once they want to write their essays or finish their studies (apart from copying and pasting into another document). It would be helpful if they could get all their notes together in one report for when they need them. This is bearing in mind a student could have 50+ notes for one reading list.

Students are able to see all their notes and reading intentions in their profile with links back to the lists.

We are going to decline this idea due to the low number of votes and the length of time this idea has been open with no further interest.

If this is still an area you would like to see further enhancements made please do raise again.

  12. Subscribe to email alert for changes to any list within My Lists

Raised on behalf of UCL student:

Rather than have to subscribe to an RSS feed on each individual list, be able to subscribe to an EMAIL summary of any additions/deletions from any list that has been added to the My Lists area. Some additional explanation from the student below.

:More info in the email the better, link to the page, what the change was (added or removed items). But reading lists are probably only changed a couple times a year really so not sure about a weekly or monthly update. Because they may not be changed that often, while ideal,…

With enhancements with the integration of reading lists into the VLE/LMS students are more actively guided to areas of the list they need to be looking at and reviewing as part of their study.

If this is still an area you would like to see further enhancements made please do raise again.

  13. "Note for library" field when creating a new list

It would be helpful to have a "Note for library" box when creating a new list in which information needed for reviewing the list could be added (e.g. numbers of students, fund code, whether the course has a coursepack, etc). As opposed to the "Description" box this information would be hidden from view.

  14. Need to get better usage data about items in the LMS catalogue which are also on reading lists

I am frequently asked for data about how often items on a reading list are borrowed or reserved, whether they are in Short Loan collection, how many multiple copies etc. This needs better links to the LMS database than we seem to have at the moment.

We were looking at a feature for acquisitions around item intelligence which tied together with LMS analytics (loans etc.) with the availability and copies info we already have to give you an idea on how an item on the reading list is actually used and when.

However, we were unable to get any interest from LMS vendors and we are no longer in this space as a company.

This usage information would need to be provided by the LMS and we recommend discussing this with your LMS vendor. What we can do is generate some reporting with the information available in Aspire which could be used by the LMS.

Please submit a reporting idea or contact us to discuss what the reporting requirements may be.

  15. Notification of broken links

Is it possible for Aspire to background run a check of all URLs to ensure that there is something at the end of them. We realise that this is a deminishing technology- but not finding what they are looking for really irritates the students

Unfortunately it is not possible for us to run an effective link checking service. Many of the links in Aspire are IP-location specific – i.e. they will work for students on campus or behind ezProxy but to Aspire they will appear broken. This makes it impossible for us to effectively implement link checking technology.

  16. Mouse rollover on the importance settings

We would like the option to add a mouse rollover/popup describing each of our importance settings to academics creating lists, to help implement our purchasing policy.

The importance fields are customisable for each university and have a different meaning for each. With this in mind to configure this would involve a different setup for each uni. Uni’s also use the importances in different ways, some use for ordering purposes while others use to guide student reading. With this level of complexity we are going to decline this idea but will continue to listen and see if others raise ideas in this area.

  17. Automate the metadata refresh

Automate the metadata refresh process e.g. set it to run at 6 am each morning so that, at peak times, items are being refreshed regularly without manual intervention

We have reviewed this idea but feedback we get of who users use the metadata refresh is varied. Some users don’t use the metadata refresh so to make it an automated process will affect all, therefore we are declining this but will continue to listen and see if there is more of a need for this in the future.

  18. Summary of items removed from list in Reviews

We'd like a summary of items that have been removed from a list in the Reviews module, including details such as its importance level and any notes for library that were next to the item.

  19. Add 'Distance Learning Course' tick box to Create List options.

At the moment there is no easy way for academics to inform us that a list is to be used by distance learning students. This has an impact on Acquisitions as it is possible that we will purchase multiple print copies that will rarely be borrowed. It would be useful to have a tick box option when the academic creates a list so we have this information.

  20. Students being able to tell if a book appears on multiple Lists

When clicking through to an item record within a List there is no indication when an item appears on multiple lists.

Feedback from course organisers and students has been that the would like to be able to identify when an item is used on multiple lists and in progressive courses to assist in making informed purchasing decisions.
