  1. Ability to mask nodes in the hierarchy that have no reading list associated with them

It would be useful to be able to mask nodes in the hierarchy which contain no reading lists associated with them. It is frustrating for the end user, particularly when browsing, to find no list at the end. It has a negative impact on student experience rather than acting as a spur to academic staff to create a reading list. In addition, to make use of Talis Aspire as a marketing tool for prospective students we feel that having nodes without lists showing as being detrimental.

We will not be focusing on this due to low votes. This idea has been declined and moved to the archive forum. In addition from an existing student and actual user’s perspective, the user might keep searching, trying to find it. The current behaviour allows the user to reach the end of the journey and discover there is nothing linked for that module.

  2. Default 'Note' field for library guidance to students

Recent discussions around Bookmarking items following the Aspire release posting of 29th September led to the idea of having a set of 'default' notes that library staff could use to provide further information about items on a list. For example, 'Licensed for use only by students registered on this course' is one that we regular use (currently adding this in the Study note field).

Ian pointed out that ideally the Study Note should stay as such, for use by tutors to guide students learning and I am in agreement with this. So, it would be useful to have a set…

We will not be focusing on this due to low votes in the 2012 ideas survey

  3. Make the ‘Preview’ button a different colour to the ‘Online resource’ button.

Can the ‘Preview’ button be made a different colour to the ‘Online resource’ button? We’re finding that some of our students see the two ‘blue’ buttons as interchangeable, and are disappointed when clicking them doesn’t always take them to the full text. Having the ‘Preview’ button a different colour will help to avoid this confusion.

  4. Metadata refresh at the List level, including a report to see before and after

We would like to see some enhancements to the Metadata Refresh function to allow a more controlled use of this function. At a global level, the ability to see a report of items that will be refreshed with the option of excluding certain items if required. Additionally, it would be very useful if there was an option to apply Metadata Refresh at the list level (to an individual list) again with the option to exclude certain items if required. Finally, a report listing the items that have been updated.

We will not be focusing on this due to low votes. This idea has been declined and moved to the archive. However, the dashboard allows metadata refresh (link to library copy) for items not linked to library copy.

  5. Update (e-)book entries to the latest edition

Unless otherwise specified, we ensure that our online reading lists always point to the latest version of books and e-books we hold in stock. At the moment, it is necessary to manually replace each link with a new one pointing to the catalogue record for the new edition.

It would save a lot of time and effort if when item were added to a list it was possible to opt for it to update to newer editions of the same item when these are added to stock, perhaps by Aspire running an overnight title/author search of the catalogue for all…

As discussed previously, we will not force the use of the newer editions as there may be a pedagogical requirement to use a specific edition and different institutions. However, the List Dashboard provides edition indicators including those in the library catalogue. We are also currently investigating the exposure of edition indicators in the reviews area

  6. Ability to copy over a section of a list

It would be helpful to have the ability to copy over a section of a reading list (this might, perhaps, be an additional command alongside "Edit | Remove" in a "New Section" box)

  7. Notes for Assign reviewer & Request review

We would find it very helpful if there was a Note field associated with both the Assugn reviewer & Request review process.

Our workflow relies on us passing reviews around library staff and the ability to add messages for the recipient would be a real benefit.

  8. Set review outcome via drop-down

We would like to be able to quickly set the review outcome of a book through some sort of "quick-click" process.

One way would be to be able to set the review out come of a book via a quick drop-down, in the same way you are currently able to quickly set the importance of an item in a reading list when creating a reading list..

Alternatively, a check-box system where multiple review outcomes could be set, would also be desirable.

The reviews refresh has not been able to resolve this. Review outcome and comments are still linked and the review outcome will be in a drop-down option

  9. Report of books with new editions available

We would like a report that could be run for batches of lists (or all lists) to find where new editions of a title are available in the library.

The dashboard feature shows this information but you have to view each list in turn to see where there are new editions. A report that showed this information would save a lot of time.

We will looking at including this capability in the reviews area

  10. A search facility within 'Edit' mode to easily retrieve individual resources attached to a list

If I want to remove a particular reference from a list, it would be much easier if there was a 'Find' option within Edit mode to help me locate the resource I want to remove/edit. Alternatively, develop the 'Filter by author ...' input box in 'list view' so that when Aspire locates the title I have searched for in the list, I can click Edit and move direclty to my searched for title within Edit mode.

  11. Change the Online Resource button to display Access eBook from the list view

    hello,
We have been looking at making it obvious to our users what type of material they are accessing from the list view.
We initially suggested that a new Resource type of Ebook could be added but following discussions the suggestion of changing the Online Resource button to displaying the Access an Ebook on the List View page was made instead of this being only available within the record. This would cut a step out and also make it clear that it was and ebook to the user.

  12. adding the option to set non-filing characters for items that start with A, An, The etc.

For the purposes of compiling reports, it would be useful if it were possible to classify non-filing characters at the beginning of item titles as in Marc Records. E.g. where the title begins with A, An, The

As discussed in the comments, the digitisation of a resource indicates a change of format rather than a new resource type, so we won’t be introducing this resource type

  14. ISSN lookup for creating bookmarks

It would be useful to be able to import biblio information into a bookmark using the ISSN, as you can already do using ISBNs.

This would reduce the amount of manual input requried by reading list creators.

  15. Rename 'My Booksmarks' e.g. 'My Aspire Bookmarks'

Just want to avoid confusion with the normal Bookmarks/ Favourites options within Browsers.

    Hi Veronica,

We don’t want to introduce this as not all customers “brand” their reading list solution with the Aspire product name.

However we are currently reviewing the My Bookmarks/My Lists areas with a view to introducing much-improved versions next year. We will take your comments on board.

    Thanks,

    Chris

  16. Emphasising fonts

    Display of font

It would be great if there was an option to italicise/display in bold data entered into the Student Notes section (or anywhere on the list really). The font would still be consistent for the institution but this would allow greater ability for list creators to add emphasis where required.

We have made the list note so that it is customisable but not the student note due to the differences that each uni would require and this is all built into the list item views and ensuring consistency there.

We are going to decline this idea, although there are 7 votes this represents 2 universities so not widely supported.

  17. Changing the name of the 'Link to Hierarchy' field to 'link to module(s)'.

When creating a list, changing the name of 'Link to Hierarchy' field to 'Link to module code(s)' would be a better name and easier to understand. Could we this be changed please?

After reviewing we are declining this idea as hierarchy does cover all terminology for all universities. We have found each universities refers to modules, units etc differently so leaving as hierarchy prevents confusion.

  18. List Review Prioritisation Options

It would be useful if academics could mark reviews as high or low priority when sending them for review. This would help us to identify lists where purchasing is urgently required and differentiate them from lists when the academic just wants things checked over

  19. Select reviewer on review request

When a list is ready for review we would like to be able to select the email address to which the review for that specific lists should be sent, rather than the address being predefined for all lists.

  20. Allow libraries to customise the text used on links and buttons in their tenancy

It would help our users if they saw the same language used in our Talis Aspire tenancy that we use in other systems (resource discovery, etc.)

To that end I'd like to be able to customise text labels and buttons at a tenancy level, changing the text so that it matches what we use elsewhere. Examples:

    "Online Resource"
    "Access the eBook"
