  1. Elevate

Talis Elevate is being piloted at our institution and one piece of feedback from academics is that they would like to export Elevate items to Talis Aspire without too much duplication of work. Could there be an option to export to reading list in Elevate to make this easier for the academics using both systems?

  2. New metadata field for online article number to ‘Article’ bookmarks

Some articles are now only published online, and will have an article number, and in some cases have no pagination information.
There are times during the bookmarking process in which this article number will be automatically pulled into the start page field in the article bookmark metadata. There is the potential for confusion about what this data means, or if the data should be retained, removed, or where it is missing, added to the pagination field.
By adding a field for article number, it provides a field to accurately capture this information.

  3. Would it be possible to add in a field so that we can include the details of translators please?

I think that having a translator option is really important: students otherwise risk referencing their sources incompletely, and the role of the translator is severely diminished if their details are not included. I'd be so grateful if this could be considered.

  4. Alert list owners/publishers when library adds new item to their list via automatic email

When academics order new titles for their resource list, we put an internal note to that effect in our order records and acquisitions add that title to the relevant Talis list once the books have arrived. Please can this action by the library trigger an automatic email to the list owner and list publishers to say that new items have been added to their list by the library and that they should add the necessary details to the new entry as needed? This would save so much time and we wouldn't need to send a separate email to those academics…

  5. Not having the chapter title overwritten when performing a LCN/ISBN lookup

Currently, when updating a chapter bookmark by performing a LCN or ISBN lookup, the chapter title is lost and the book title appears in the chapter title field.

Surely somebody has raised this issue before?

    Thank you.

  6. Chapter bookmarks display book author (if no other author)

When we bookmark a chapter that doesn't have separate author(s), could the book author(s) or editor(s) be displayed in in the 'main' view of the reading list? I think this would help students to find readings, and with alphabetising reading lists.

  7. More refined translation of 700 field

Talis is currently treating the 700 MARC field as follows:

If 700$e=Author, Talis puts the name found in an Author field
If 700 $e =Editor or Editor of Compilation, Talis puts the name found in an Editor field

All fine so far. However, if anything else is found in $e, Talis defaults to using the Author field again.

We use the 700 field to indicate donors and former owners of donated collections. As per OCLC guidance we indicate that this 'person' is a donor or former owner via the $e field. But these people are not displaying as authors within…

  8. Multiple holdings on one bookmark

It would be really helpful if we could have multiple holdings, or LCNs against one bookmark.

Here at RHUL we have a large literature collection, and where an academic has indicated the specific edition is not important, we have a situation whereby we have to have multiple bookmarks for the same title in order to accurately alert students to all the different copies that might be available.

This ends up not only being time consuming to manage, but looks extremely messy on the list.

  9. Create new resource format "Article without Authentication"

We would like a new resource format “Article without Authentication” to be made available.
This would be used as a resource format for bookmarking free journal articles from the web but would not add in article authentication.
Since more and more journals/articles are available from open access sources it removes the issue of having to continually update EZ Proxy authentication.

This would also get around the problem that EZ Proxy authentication is added in after the Reviews stage, and that authentication issues may only be visible from the student view.
There are certain courses such as journalism that use huge…

  10. Bookmarking with Multiple URLs

It would be useful if we could add multiple URLs to a bookmark, whereas currently we're restricted to just one.

In instances where we have the same title electronically from different suppliers, it could reduce turnaways due to running out of credit. It could also allow for instances where a single bookmark requires separate URLs for different volumes.

  11. Exception List when bookmarking

We would like a resource exception list so, when bookmarking from specified resources, TARL does not check the local LMS or OpenLibrary for metadata.

We have a resource called Safari Online, it contains lots of IT books. Sometimes, when trying to bookmark to the title level or chapter level, if the item is found in our LMS or in openlibrary, the metadata from these systems will be used instead of the Safari resource. The main fustrating thing about this, is that the URL to the item is not added to the bookmark. The academics adding items ot the list, need…

  12. Adding a bookmarked item to multiple lists

It would be really useful to be able to add a bookmark to several lists at once. For example a new edition is being added to a list but they still need to keep the old edition as well, being able to add the bookmark to several lists at once (and publish the changes) would be wonderful.

This was an idea someone else submitted back in 2014, but we've had requests from academics and also as part of some changes to our acquisitions processes that have meant i'd like it to be reconsidered.

To be able to find and replace all instances across lists is something we are considering within our continuous improvements. We are keen to understand the importance of such a feature across the user group so encourage others to consider this idea and support if it is something that they feel strongly will have a positive impact.

  13. Bookmarking on iPads

Our academic staff are all being given iPads at the start of the 2018/19 session and will be encouraged to use these as much as possible

It would be really great if a bookmarking tool could be developed for Safari on iPads (or possibly even a list management app?!?) so that we could give our academic engagement a real boost.

We are working on bookmarking functionality alongside our List Edit improvements, this will reduce the reliance on the bookmarklet feature and enable more resources to be accessible in the List Edit context. When this feature is released, we will revisit this idea to understand if it still has relevance.

We would be interested to understand the use case for this, so what will enabling more exports allow the user to do that they can’t do today? Is that a benefit for library staff, academic or student. If you can update this idea with your thoughts and we can then review.

  15. Importing RIS files into existing lists

We would like to be able to import bookmarks created from RIS into existing lists rather than just new lists

  16. Creating a bookmark and adding item (direct) to a list

When creating a bookmark and adding item (direct) to a list, enabling either ‘search’ function for the list or list them alphabetically or by most recently used. If you have many lists it can be hard and time-consuming to locate your list.

  17. Automatically bookmark videos as "Online Resources"

During our pilot phase, we've noticed that when academics add YouTube or BoB videos to their lists, they generally forget to tick the "Online Resource" box - possibly because they are used to it happening automatically when they bookmark, e.g., articles and ebooks.

It would be useful if online videos could be automatically recognised as "Online Resources" by the bookmarking tool.

At present this does not happen because "audio-visual document" resource type can include, e.g., DVDs listed on a Library catalogue (not an online resource). However, could there not be a workaround similar to the one for ebooks (see: http://support.talis.com/hc/en-us/articles/205644351-How-the-Online-Resource-button-works

  18. Copying bookmarks

This suggestion relates to an extension of the facility to copy over bookmarks, as it would be usful to have the option to copy over the notes (associated with any bookmark), in addition to its importance level.

  19. Differentiation between Chapters and Extracts in Reading lists to enhance integration with TADC requests

We use Chapter/books in reading lists, then when digitisations are requested it is assumed they are complete chapters when we might only want a small section. or sections of the book. We would like the option to add extracts/sections here. At present we can only add one page range and we would also need multiple page ranges to be added
. When we then request a digitisation, the correct section rather than complete chapter would be selected thereby hopefully lessening the number of referrals needed in TADC.

  20. Editing the note on a bookmarked item

At present it is possible to add a note to an item at the point of bookmarking, but it isn't possible to edit or delete that note after the bookmark has been created. It would be useful to be able to do so.

    backlog  ·  Keji Adedeji responded

Whilst we would like to make this improvement, it is currently not in our near term focus, so I’m moved it to the backlog to reflect this. idea has been moved to our backlog Ideas may be graduated from the backlog as we get through the ones that are planned.
