  1. Leveraging coverage data for Journals and articles provided for Google Scholar library links

Libraries provide data on journal and article coverage for the Google Scholar library links program via a weekly file produced by their open url providers

Could Talis Aspire also utilise this data?
    Possible uses would be
    - indicate on lists and when bookmarking that full text is available
    - produce reports when digitised items are available in subscriptions
    - produce reports when articles on lists are dropped from subscriptions

  2. Alerts of system problems on the screen they affect

When there are known system problems - e.g. bookmarking isn't working, or list editing will have errors, or My Lists aren't loading, or functionality is unavailable due to maintenance etc - there should be an alert on the relevant screen to inform the user of this.

It will stop the endless amount of reports to site admins and then to you, all reporting the same thing and duplicating time and effort. It would also be a more positive experience for the user, as they will be assured that a problem is known about and is being investigated, rather than just…

This is not currently in our near term development focus so it has been moved to the longer term backlog.

Ideas may be graduated from the backlog as we get through the ones that are planned.

  3. Add section information to the CSV output of the linked data API

It would be nice to add two new columns to the CSV output for the linked data API. These two new columns would contain information about the section the item is in and the parent section. This information would be enough to construct the section information from the CSV call and help to surface content in other systems (the VLE for example).

  4. Resource type: Other

However extensive the resource type taxonomy becomes, there will always be fringe cases, exceptions and oddities. At present, the only options in such cases are to select the least worst match or the unfathomable 'Generic document'. An 'Other' category would be a more preferrable means to classify non-standard materials (and could be used for reporting/review to identify the types of material not being fully accounted for)

  5. Resource Type - 'Social media' (or similar)

We've not been able to identify a better label for this, but are open to suggestions. The intention is to distinguish blog, forum, social media and web 2.0 type content from 'traditional' Web Site and Web Page types. It's the difference between referencing material on the BBC News site and referencing a debate on an internet forum, or the discussion which follows a blog post

  7. Ability to know who deleted a node

We just discovered that a module had disappeared and Support were only able to tell us that someone had deleted it. It was definitely loaded and viewed in Aspire before. It is disappointing that we can't tell who deleted it when; can this be made possible, either for us or Support?
I do realise this Idea partly relates to the "More granular set of edit node permissions required" - if that were implemented, the ability to delete a node could be tied down much more and at least the pool of potential deleters would be more limited!
    I realise this…

  8. network file bookmark

not sure if I missed something, one of our academics asked if it were possible to bookmark a network file
    file://server/share/path/reallyUseful.doc

naturally it would only be visible inside the university, so a restricted access label would be required

I have suggested locating it on a web page or eLearning site, but he would like the option anyway

We will not be focusing on this now due to low votes in the 2012 ideas survey However, we think this is a valuable idea and is something we will wish to investigate in the future, so its on our longer term backlog

  9. Allow invites to be created without sending emails

At the moment an email invite is sent for every invite issued - even if the user is already has an active login to Aspire. This can result in multiple emails sitting in a user's inbox.

Rather than emailing invites to users, administrators can elect to suppress the email invites.

In this circumstance, users are asked to accept invites the next time they log into the system.

  11. Make lists available only to those registered on the module

We have some lecturers who are concerned about some sensitive content on their reading lists. They state that they are happy to upload material to our VLE as this is restricted only to students registered on the module, who they have been able to give a "warning" about the sensitivity, but they are concerned about other members of the University being able to view the material out of context. We would therefore like it to be possible for reading lists to be restricted only those registered on a module.

  12. section titles

It would be really useful for us to have the section title included in the All Items Report. I've managed to link the column 'Has Container' with the section URL found in Google Analytics, however a lot of the time, our academics want to know how students are interacting with each section when using LTI with Moodle. If the All Items Report included the section title it would be a lot easier to feed back to them on this.

  13. Add article authentication at Reviews stage so errors can be picked up at this point

We would like authentication to be added at the Reviews stage so full checking can be carried out at this point.
Currently because ez proxy authentication is added to links after the Review, the student link can give authentication errors that were not visible at Reviews. So if a lecturer bookmarks an article from a free e-journal, the link will work from Reviews but possibly not from the actual list page. As more and more articles are made open access this is a growing issue. (I am also going to suggest separately an article format that does not include authentication).

  14. Allow us to edit the default subject line of "review is complete" message

Currently we have to use the automated "review is complete" email even when sending a review back to academics to ask that they add student numbers/importances before we can review it. We would like to be able to edit the subject line of this email ourselves to say something like "Requiring Action – additional information required for Resource List review" Otherwise, the academics just think their review has been completed, with no further action required.

  15. Include hierarchy in review interface

We would like the review interface to make searching for the hierarchy/module code possible.

  16. Browse hierarchy - move +Add List button closer

When no list is attached to a module can the +Add List button be moved closer so there is less white space on the screen between module code/name and the button. We think some lecturers look at this quickly and do not spot the button.

  17. Include comments in Export Review CSV

We will have a number of different workflows for ordering of books needed for reading lists. In the case of those people who review reading lists but do not place orders it would be useful if they could add a review comment about the number of copies to be ordered, budget etc. and then have this included when they export the review. The CSV file could then be sent to the staff who do the ordering.

  18. Scoping of list creator role to an individual list

I would like to suggest the scoping of the list creator role to an individual list only. Currently, the list creator role is a 'system-wide permission' which allows list creators to edit any lists.

  19. OpenURL should include Source ID for Talis

Every OpenURL created by Talis should include a source ID name/value pair so that
    a) Our link resolver stats clearly indicate the volume of OpenURL requests from Talis
    b) We can identify the source of the problem URL when our clients use the auto problem report form on our link resolver (which includes the problem OpenURL

This is standard across OpenURL sources. Might I suggest appending this string to every Talis OpenURL?:

  20. Add time period information within bookmark item

Add the time period information within a bookmark item, for example within 'This item appears on' section.

We get feedback from students claiming they are unable to access a particular reading. This is because they are accessing an archived/previous version of a reading list, and a digitisation has expired. This is possibly caused by academics directly linking to these specific bookmarked readings from within the VLE. From a student perspective, they will see their course code listed in the 'This item appears on' and not think anything further.

Adding the semester information would provide a cue for them that a…
