  1. Search by item

It would be really useful for librarians doing stock work to be able to search Aspire by item to see if an item they are reviewing is on a reading list.

Such a search feature may also be useful to academics wanting to check they have a particular item on any of their lists without having to search each list.

We have introduced three new filters on the All List items report which should make it easier to search for and report on specific works, Title, ISBN-10 and ISBN-13.

If this is still something you feel would benefit academics than please do raise a new idea.

  2. Have you read this? - Tagging

Responses from a recent Aspire focus group with undergraduates showed that although they felt the 'Have you read this' tagging was a useful feature- most would only use it if they could display a list of items tagged as 'planning to read' or 'have read'. Other suggestions were to indicate the 'read' status in the main resource list view.

  3. Selective export to Bibliographic Management Software (RefWorks, EndNote)

    Students should be able to:

Flag, tag, tick or basket selected items in a Resource List (or Lists) and then export them to one of the standard Bibliographic Management applications, such as RefWorks or Endnote.

For RefWorks, and other systems, a direct export facility should be offered; with a RIS formatted indirect export as a fallback.

Aspire is not a Bibliographic Management application, but needs to integrate as easily as possible with applications which are. Students who are being encouraged to consult materials in their studies will want to be able to cite and refer to those materials in their…

I’m marking this idea as completed. We’ve got some more enhancements to do here, including selective export of citations (which we’re planning to implement from the My Bookmarks screen) but the spirit of this idea is now delivered to the application. For enhancements, please raise new ideas or email LIS-ASPIRE where there is an active thread discussing this feature.

  4. Enabling lists to be sorted by importance

Allow a student to be able to see resources on a list grouped by their assigned importance i.e. all the essential reading, all the recommended etc

  5. "Back to list" in item should go to back to where user has come from in list

Some of our lists are quite long. From the user's point of view if they click into an item to view it and then "Go back to list" they are always taken back to the very top of the list. It would be much better if they could be returned to the point in the list they left ... or at least to the section they left. Going back to the very top of a long list is quite annoying for users.

  6. Supress 'no copies held' on e books

Under the Library Availability banner when we have an Electronic book, we would like to suppress "no copies held" - we think that it will confuse our students

We have made some changes to the library availability display. Where an eBook is detected, we display an appropriate message instead of the availability information. This was in our last release

  7. Separator for multiple authors

Where a resource has multiple authors the names are currently separated by a comma. This could be confusing for a non-Librarian as a comma is also used between first name and last name. Could a semi-colon be to separate authors instead?

  8. Include call number and location of item on one interface for students

At the moment, the only way to see a call number of a book (if we have it of course) is to click on the item, taking us away from the long list or resources. This addition may encourage more lecturers to use Talis as all the relevant item location information will be available on one interface, making it then suitable for printing. Just a quick idea I had after a reading list meeting.

  9. Improved RIS support for import and export of citations to other reference manager software

Currently, Talis allows mapping of RIS data in and out of Talis as detailed here: http://support.talis.com/hc/en-us/articles/206848335-Mapping-RIS-fields-to-Talis-Aspire
We would like "editor" and authors of chapters to be included in this to allow greater specificity for importing and exporting citations from other systems such as zotero.

  10. Allow students to rate resources within a list.

Students can already note whether they have read an item or not but it would also be useful for academics and library staff to see how they evaluated individual items on a list.

This information is now reflected in the dashboard providing academics and library staff with feedback on how a student is interacting with the list via reading intentions and notes they are making.

  11. 'Back to top' / 'Back to TOC' link in long lists

The TOC functionality allows downwards/forward navigation in long lists, but there is no equivalent upwards/backwards link. Could such a link be defaulted (premised on a business rule about list item length, perhaps)?

Improved ToC functionality now includes a docking ToC which is always visible as you scroll through a list and allows you to jump to any section

  12. Allow Google to crawl reading lists

Google is currently blocked by Talis from crawling reading lists, however other search engines are not. Google is currently the most popular search engine and allowing it to crawl and index reading lists would enhance discoverability.

  13. Have the Table of Contents for long lists open by default

Have the Table of Contents for long lists open by default (without having to use the [show] link). Perhaps there could be two links:

    [show] [show always]

    (or when open)

    [hide] [hide always]

This could describe the default open/close status of the list, as set by the list publisher.

Whilst not addressing this particular suggestion i.e. opening by default, the ToC improvements should alleviate the issues underlying this suggestion. The ToC is now clearer, stays docked and will can remain open and visible while scrolling through a list

  14. Convert / export items into popular referencing formats (Harvard etc)

This is done by many resources - Summon for example. The formatted record can be copied or e-mailed.

The list bibliography view which has been introduced converts a list into a citation style which can be copied.

  15. Screen design for license

At the top of every list we have a large prominent diaply for the license consisting of both the logo, including the conditions, and then another spelling out of the conditions again. This is both heavy on the eye (why repeat it twice?) and an incitement for academic staff to quibble. Could we just have the logo without spelling it out twice?

  16. Library availability - search alternatives link

Increase text size/create button for links to both of the following...

    • View in library catalogue

    • Search the library catalogue for other formats/editions

At the moment these links are too discrete.

This has been done as part of the Phase 4 improvements to the item view

  17. Improving 'no image available'

Instead of the generic 'no image available' icon (and not conflicting with the idea previously logged of having an upload/snapshot image tool), could Aspire support the idea of Tenancy specific generic icons which were resource type sensitive. So the workflow would be: 'This is a journal article; I have no image to accompany this; retrieve and display the Tenancy specific journal article icon'.

We’ve not gone for a tenancy specific option here, but we have iremoved the “no image available” display when no image is available.

  18. Displaying items by week required

    Ideas from student focus group:

One of the key comments from all participants was to be able to view their resource list readings by week required.

  19. Make it easier for students to find items they have made personal notes on

As suggested- a comment made on another idea. It would be good if in the personalised areas there was a filter to lists/items with personal notes 'attached'.

This would fit into the student revision workflow. At high stress and time poor periods students will want a quick way to get back to resources they found helpful.

I think a feature like this would encourage them to put notes on in the first place. At the moment there is not a great incentive to use the notes area.

  20. suppress googlebooks preview icon if the equivalent e-book is in stock

We have a pretty healthy collection of (paid-for) e-books - and these show in the list as they should. But if there is also a googlebook for the same title, the googlebook preview icon also shows. Not only is this confusing for the student, but it diverts them from the paid-for resource

Since the introduction of the Online Resource button (whose appearance will also be improved – see top idea), where a resource is an ebook, the google preview is now suppressed.
