  1. Removal of duplicates from bibliography

When you view list as bibliography it duplicates references where there are multiple bookmarks for the same item. It would be good to remove these duplicates so that if necessary academics can quickly produce a bibliography if necessary without having to edit it.

  2. Add class/shelf number to exported reading list

When exporting reading lists to pdf we feel it would be useful to include class/shelf number of books within the reading list. After a meeting on the implications of the Disabled Students Allowance we were asked to investigate how reading lists handouts that give library class/shelf number could help our student's. Talis Aspire reading lists were flagged as an area where this could happen and we thought this could help promote the reading lists software.

  3. Improved handling of withdrawn items/records

Keeping the academic (for their list) and the library (for Aspire as a whole) informed that copies or the resource itself are no longer in the catalogue, and ensuring students are not presented with a broken link in the Catalogue.

    backlog  ·  Keji Adedeji responded

This is not in our near term development focus, so it has been moved to the longer term backlog.

Ideas may be graduated from the backlog as we get through the ones that are planned.

Dashboard 2.0 already includes some functionality to inform academics about availability of materials on their list and there are plans to bring this out of BETA soon.

  4. RSS feeds needed to show academics/students availability of new items added to their lists in "Recent Changes"

In "Recent Changes" we can view the changes made to a particular list and this can be accessed via RSS feed. However, currently it does not include exact resources added to/removed from a list; it simply gives some indication of when a list has been edited.
Please could you include resources in the RSS feed and set this up for the whole site, thanks.

  5. More control over the presentation of bonus content

Currently, Aspire takes anything in the 856 field and identifies the item as an electronic resource. We use the 856 field to include bonus content, such as a link to Table of Contents or links to publisher's websites. This is very confusing for students who click on the resource, thinking it is an e-book, only to find it is a hard copy

  6. Include item availability when printing lists

Many students print their reading lists and go to the library service desks to ask for help finding items. It would be helpful if, when they printed a list, physical items showed item availability information such as shelfmark and location.

This would help the student find the items they need quickly and also reduce the amount of time staff take helping students find this information.

  7. Reporting/requesting option for missing book jacket images in New List View

Given the increased prominence of book jacket images in New List View, could we please have a means of requesting jacket images be sourced when they are missing? We have a number of instances of books where we do have a jacket image in our library catalogue, but it doesn't appear in New List View because those images are sourced elsewhere (Nielsen Book Data apparently). We'd like to be able to request missing ones.

  8. Linking to more than one bookshop

We would like to be able to link to more than one bookshop as then we can support our local bookshop via Hive and also offer Amazon purchasing for items not available locally. Also this would enable us to use the Amazon images while still offering access to the local bookshop

this is an interesting idea and whilst it has low votes and there are no plans currently to implement, i am keeping this under review for consideration

  10. Improved reading intentions

The latest phase 4 release has altered the way a user's reading intentions are displayed. At present the can be set at the list level and reviewed on the user profile screen.

One problem with this arrangement is that a user needs to go back to the original reading list to change the reading intention or alter the note, even though they can link through to the original item.

I would like to see the ability to change the reading intentions either from the user profile screen or at the item level, in addition to existing list-level reading intention management.

improving the display of reading intentions is something we would like to address, but is currently not planned

  11. Export List in list format with selected citation styles

We have noticed that there are two options to export a list as PDF. As bibliography and as list view. The List view exports each resource retaining the format from the list (great) but it doesn’t enable the export to retain the preferred citation style. Ideally we would like to see an exported PDF which retains both the list format and has the correct citation style.

Bibliography export does allow export of each in citation, but the list format is not retained and only an alpha list is provided.

    Thanks

  13. Add multiple book vendors to item records

We currently have a link to Amazon for our item records but we also have an agreement with John Smith booksellers to provide texts to First Years as a part of a bursary arrangement.

It would be extremely useful to be able to show a second link to another bookseller to make it easy for the First Years to click through to the point of acquisition from the reading list.

  14. Improve usability of list searches from the Aspire homepage

    This idea comprises:
    • Ability to filter or refine list searches
    • Changes the behaviour of pagination in list search results
    • The option to change the terminology on links which appear in the course of searching
    • ‘Back to the school of XYZ’
    • ‘Others’ label in the search result

*Ability to filter or refine list searches

If you’re not searching for a specific list, a search may bring back many results. With the page limited to displaying 10 results you may have to page through several screens.

Can filters be introduced to help refine this? For example bringing…

  15. Misleading messages...

When there's a connection problem between the catalogue and Aspire, the message in Aspire reads "This item is not available" - a little misleading. Would it be better to read something like "Information on this item is not available, please check the catalogue for more details"?

  16. Dashboard - New edition notification opt-in

At the moment there is an option to request an email notification if any alternative resources are located for a specific item within the Dashboard.

One of our Academic Support Librarians suggested it would be useful if course organisers could opt-in to be notified via an email when the Dashboard feature picks up a new edition of any book on that list.

  17. Make lists available only to those registered on the module

We have some lecturers who are concerned about some sensitive content on their reading lists. They state that they are happy to upload material to our VLE as this is restricted only to students registered on the module, who they have been able to give a "warning" about the sensitivity, but they are concerned about other members of the University being able to view the material out of context. We would therefore like it to be possible for reading lists to be restricted only those registered on a module.

  18. Improve options to link in LTI (open in new tab)

In the LTI for Moodle we only have access to the two options - in line display or open on seperate page. Can we please have open in new tab as well.

  19. My Notes - To be able to identify which List the Item is from

When a student clicks on their profile and looks at 'My notes', the notes are displayed with a link to the item the note was placed on, however when clicking through to the item there is no indication as to what list or lists the item is on.

This almost defeats the purpose of a number of notes that a student may choose to place on an item if they are then unable to identify which list the item they placed that note on came from.

I agree that this could be confusing, especially if a student has used that feature in anger and made a lot of notes.

However, This is not currently in our near term development focus so it has been moved to the longer term backlog.

  20. Additional supported sites for embedded video

Youtube and Vimeo are currently supported in Talis to embed videos within the full metadata view of a bookmark.
We've recently subscribed to EduTV, which is an excellent database of videos and playlists, and would like to have the same embedding for this resource.
We also have a large collection of streamed media hosted in-house (both off-air and commercial material as is permitted under copyright provisions), and would like these to be similarly embedded within Talis.
This was originally submitted as a support ticket question but it's been suggested that I raise an idea instead.

    backlog  ·  Keji Adedeji responded

A simple integration in the vein of the YouTube & Vimeo integrations can be dealt with via support as a bookmarking recogniser request. A tighter integration to support authenticated content will require liaising with EduTv to understand the requirements and will need to be planned.

However, this is not currently in our near term development focus so it has been moved to the longer term backlog while we focus on items in the development focus.

Ideas may be graduated from the backlog as we get through the ones that are planned.
