  1. Misleading messages...

When there's a connection problem between the catalogue and Aspire, the message in Aspire reads "This item is not available" - a little misleading. Would it be better to read something like "Information on this item is not available, please check the catalogue for more details"?

  3. Display the total number of students associated with a work across all current Reading Lists

The calculated total across all courses will better inform the acquisitions decision. For instance the library may have a guideline to provision 1 book per 50 students. Book ABC is then added to Course X which has 100 students. The Librarian sees that we have 1 book in stock so orders a second copy. A little later Book ABC is added to Course Y which also has 100 students. The Librarian sees that we have two copies which covers the Course Y students, and ignorant of the Course X requirements does not acquire any more copies. The end result is…

We’ve introduced this capability in the new reviews area and we will review how it can be exposed elsewhere in the system

  4. Dashboard - New edition notification opt-in

At the moment there is an option to request an email notification if any alternative resources are located for a specific item within the Dashboard.

One of our Academic Support Librarians suggested it would be useful if course organisers could opt-in to be notified via an email when the Dashboard feature picks up a new edition of any book on that list.

Looking into as part of wider investigations into notifications across the system

  5. Students sharing notes about reesources

One of our academics has suggested that it would be useful for some of his students to collaborate with each other when going through their reading lists. He thought that it would be helpful for students to be able to share comments they have made about resources or to add comments to the reading list itself. Students have access to collaborative tools in the VLE but this would be specifically readings-based.

  6. Selective copy-and-paste of list items and sections

With a dynamic course environment, existing lists sometimes need to be merged or disaggregrated to support changes in module or course provision.

At present, the facility to 'copy to my Bookmarks' enables a Publisher to copy list items one-by-one to their My Bookmarks set and then add them one-by-one to a new destination list using the Edit feature.

This can be a very laborious and time-consuming process when large scale item replication is required.

Aspire could include a list View which enabled list Publishers to selectively tick the items in a list (including a one tick option for an entire…

This is not currently in our near term development focus so it has been moved to the longer term backlog while we focus on items in the development focus.

Ideas may be graduated from the backlog as we get through the ones that are planned.

  7. Display both print and ebook holdings for one bookmark for the same title (an archived Idea for 2013)

Here at Sussex we're very keen to have this Idea, archived for 2013, available for voting in the 2014 Ideas Forum: http://ideas.talisaspire.com/forums/32805-talis-aspire-reading-lists-ideas-archive/suggestions/4381768-display-both-print-and-ebook-holdings-for-one-book.

We're increasingly buying ebooks in addition to print copies, and it would be extremely useful, both to Library staff and students, to have a single entry for a specific work in Aspire, but with linkage to alternative editions. This would provide users with a choice of available formats depending on their needs, as well as promoting the Library’s collection.

We would like to improve the ability to display as much info that we have about a resource even if it is not the specific format that was originally bookmarked.

A redesign of how we display holdings would probably be required and this is not currently in our short term development focus.

This idea so it has been moved to the longer term backlog. It will be merged with a similar existing idea.

Ideas may be graduated from the backlog as we get through the ones that are planned.

  8. Streamline route through to online books, journals etc.

Clicking on a title of an item takes users to a page about that resource rather than the resource itself. For online items this is a pain and I've seen staff and students be completely put off by this (especially when most of the list contains online items). They don't notice the 'online resource' button to the right of the screen. They think it's an icon not the shortcut link they're looking for. I would much prefer the 'view in library catalogue'/ability to add notes etc. page to be the secondary link. This type of info should open in a…

We have some ideas about a new approach to display of list item details which may address this.

However, this is not currently in our near term development focus so it has been moved to the longer term backlog.

Ideas may be graduated from the backlog as we get through the ones that are planned.

  9. Suggested improvements to My Notes & Reading Intentions

The summary list of "my notes" and "my reading intentions" displayed on one's username profile page do not expire or archive. Further they seem disorganised and are without a date stamp to indicate when a note was left. Instead the lists grow to contain notes and data from every old list. The lists would get very long and disorganised due to intentions and notes left from past reading lists, leading the profile summary page to become of little use to students.

For the My Notes and Reading Intentions sections, I recommend:
    1) sorting (e.g. by date);
    2) display the date…

Improving this for students is something we would like to do, but is likely to need a theme in this area.

This is not currently in our near term development focus so it has been moved to the longer term backlog.

  10. My Notes - To be able to identify which List the Item is from

When a student clicks on their profile and looks at 'My notes', the notes are displayed with a link to the item the note was placed on, however when clicking through to the item there is no indication as to what list or lists the item is on.

This almost defeats the purpose of a number of notes that a student may choose to place on an item if they are then unable to identify which list the item they placed that note on came from.

I agree that this could be confusing, especially if a student has used that feature in anger and made a lot of notes.

However, This is not currently in our near term development focus so it has been moved to the longer term backlog.

  11. Additional supported sites for embedded video

Youtube and Vimeo are currently supported in Talis to embed videos within the full metadata view of a bookmark.
We've recently subscribed to EduTV, which is an excellent database of videos and playlists, and would like to have the same embedding for this resource.
We also have a large collection of streamed media hosted in-house (both off-air and commercial material as is permitted under copyright provisions), and would like these to be similarly embedded within Talis.
This was originally submitted as a support ticket question but it's been suggested that I raise an idea instead.

A simple integration in the vein of the YouTube & Vimeo integrations can be dealt with via support as a bookmarking recogniser request. A tighter integration to support authenticated content will require liaising with EduTv to understand the requirements and will need to be planned.

However, this is not currently in our near term development focus so it has been moved to the longer term backlog while we focus on items in the development focus.

Ideas may be graduated from the backlog as we get through the ones that are planned.

  12. Linking to more than one bookshop

We would like to be able to link to more than one bookshop as then we can support our local bookshop via Hive and also offer Amazon purchasing for items not available locally. Also this would enable us to use the Amazon images while still offering access to the local bookshop

this is an interesting idea and whilst it has low votes and there are no plans currently to implement, i am keeping this under review for consideration

  13. Improved reading intentions

The latest phase 4 release has altered the way a user's reading intentions are displayed. At present the can be set at the list level and reviewed on the user profile screen.

One problem with this arrangement is that a user needs to go back to the original reading list to change the reading intention or alter the note, even though they can link through to the original item.

I would like to see the ability to change the reading intentions either from the user profile screen or at the item level, in addition to existing list-level reading intention management.

  14. Organising 'My Bookmarks'

It is becoming really important for our academics to be able to organise their bookmarks. We know tags are the currnet thinking with filters- but some academics have a mental block against this. They are so used to having very structured resources/citations and without the ability to oraganise and sort (things like author- title- date- type- notes/modules ....) the resources within their 'library'

We are currently refactoring the My Bookmarks screen to work in a way that allows users to sort and filter more effectively. Although this won’t include tagging or sorting yet, it does provide the framework for further options in this area.

  15. RSS feeds needed to show academics/students availability of new items added to their lists in "Recent Changes"

In "Recent Changes" we can view the changes made to a particular list and this can be accessed via RSS feed. However, currently it does not include exact resources added to/removed from a list; it simply gives some indication of when a list has been edited.
Please could you include resources in the RSS feed and set this up for the whole site, thanks.

  16. Display sections on their own

Related to the idea of compressing/opening sections (in this idea: http://ideas.talisaspire.com/forums/32805-talis-aspire-ideas/suggestions/3160575-compressing-sections) I'd like some facility to be able to link/jump to a specific section or sub-section of a list, and display it in a way that is uncluttered by the rest of the list.

Ideally this would mean jumping to a section and the display automatically compressing all the other sections. The user could expand / navigate to them if they wanted.

Alternatively the user is taken to a version of the display that only contains the specific section, with a hyperlink back to the full list.

    The reason…

  17. Improved handling of withdrawn items/records

Keeping the academic (for their list) and the library (for Aspire as a whole) informed that copies or the resource itself are no longer in the catalogue, and ensuring students are not presented with a broken link in the Catalogue.

Dashboard 2.0 already includes some functionality to inform academics about availability of materials on their list and there are plans to bring this out of BETA soon.

  18. More control over the presentation of bonus content

Currently, Aspire takes anything in the 856 field and identifies the item as an electronic resource. We use the 856 field to include bonus content, such as a link to Table of Contents or links to publisher's websites. This is very confusing for students who click on the resource, thinking it is an e-book, only to find it is a hard copy

  19. On 'recent changes' include who published the list

At present clicking on 'recent changes' shows the name of the list, the date, what was added. It would be very useful to see the email address of who actually published the list to keep track of activity.

  20. quick links to resources?

The details page for a resource is sometimes great (e.g. when there is a google books preview, inline viewer, or a student wants to annotate the list, plus the clear statement of library holdings...) but sometimes it's just an unnecessary click e.g. linking to a website.
Also, nothing opens in a new window so it can (sometimes) be a pain to get back into aspire again once you've followed a link to an external resource.

What are your thoughts on a lightbox to view details pages for resources?

Or perhaps a new window could be opened when you leave talis…
