  1. Display of chapters

When we add specific chapters to lists we'd like the title of the book as well as the title of the chapter to be automatically included in the display. We currently manually edit entries to include both, for example.
The Reformation Parliament, IN: Parliament and politics in Scotland, 1235-1560 - K. M. Brown
This think would make it easier for students to identify the chapter when browsing a list

    • Display both print and ebook holdings for one bookmark for the same title (an archived Idea for 2013)

Here at Sussex we're very keen to have this Idea, archived for 2013, available for voting in the 2014 Ideas Forum: http://ideas.talisaspire.com/forums/32805-talis-aspire-reading-lists-ideas-archive/suggestions/4381768-display-both-print-and-ebook-holdings-for-one-book.

We're increasingly buying ebooks in addition to print copies, and it would be extremely useful, both to Library staff and students, to have a single entry for a specific work in Aspire, but with linkage to alternative editions. This would provide users with a choice of available formats depending on their needs, as well as promoting the Library’s collection.

        backlog  ·  Keji Adedeji responded

We would like to improve the ability to display as much info that we have about a resource even if it is not the specific format that was originally bookmarked.

A redesign of how we display holdings would probably be required and this is not currently in our short term development focus.

This idea so it has been moved to the longer term backlog. It will be merged with a similar existing idea.

Ideas may be graduated from the backlog as we get through the ones that are planned.

      • Display list in an alternate style

Ability to display lists in a specific citation style - Many of our courses use the Harvard style and although lists can be viewed as a bibliography and exported in specific citation styles, our course organisers would like to be able to provide a consistent approach in the way they are presenting their reading lists. They would like the option to present the list itself in the Harvard style, i.e. by Author first not Title.

        • Organising 'My Bookmarks'

It is becoming really important for our academics to be able to organise their bookmarks. We know tags are the currnet thinking with filters- but some academics have a mental block against this. They are so used to having very structured resources/citations and without the ability to oraganise and sort (things like author- title- date- type- notes/modules ....) the resources within their 'library'

We are currently refactoring the My Bookmarks screen to work in a way that allows users to sort and filter more effectively. Although this won’t include tagging or sorting yet, it does provide the framework for further options in this area.

          • A keyword search for e.g. book titles within Talis Aspire

The ability to search for book titles within the Talis Aspire tenancy from a search box, thus allowing users to see if books are on other lists.

            • Tag items

Is it possible to be able to tag / mark items as 'Electronic Resource' for online journal articles and e-books etc and then be able to re-group the list to display all electronic resources together?

Tagging is something we plan to address and it is in backlog. However, it is not yet scoped or prioritised but we will update this idea as we progress.

              • Display sections on their own

Related to the idea of compressing/opening sections (in this idea: http://ideas.talisaspire.com/forums/32805-talis-aspire-ideas/suggestions/3160575-compressing-sections) I'd like some facility to be able to link/jump to a specific section or sub-section of a list, and display it in a way that is uncluttered by the rest of the list.

Ideally this would mean jumping to a section and the display automatically compressing all the other sections. The user could expand / navigate to them if they wanted.

Alternatively the user is taken to a version of the display that only contains the specific section, with a hyperlink back to the full list.

                The reason…

                • Display the Edition metadata in the reading list view

Current the reading list title, author(s) and publication date are displayed in a reading list. The user needs to click on the title to see the remaining metadata information, such as Edition. This is an idea to also display the Edition data (if available) in the reading list view. Exposing the edition data at a glance would be useful to the student, as well as the list owner. It would help to keep the list up to date, and assist with list auditing and quality checking.

                  • Links to Worldcat in item view - instead of a bookstore

We'd like to have the option of replacing the bookstore in the item view with a link to Worldcat.

At the moment, several bookstore options exist (see: https://support.talis.com/hc/en-us/articles/209262049-What-bookstores-are-supported-in-the-item-view-). However, in response to feedback from our academics, we would like to see the possibility of linking to a vendor-neutral external catalogue instead.

                    • Selective copy-and-paste of list items and sections

With a dynamic course environment, existing lists sometimes need to be merged or disaggregrated to support changes in module or course provision.

At present, the facility to 'copy to my Bookmarks' enables a Publisher to copy list items one-by-one to their My Bookmarks set and then add them one-by-one to a new destination list using the Edit feature.

This can be a very laborious and time-consuming process when large scale item replication is required.

Aspire could include a list View which enabled list Publishers to selectively tick the items in a list (including a one tick option for an entire…

                      • Display the total number of students associated with a work across all current Reading Lists

The calculated total across all courses will better inform the acquisitions decision. For instance the library may have a guideline to provision 1 book per 50 students. Book ABC is then added to Course X which has 100 students. The Librarian sees that we have 1 book in stock so orders a second copy. A little later Book ABC is added to Course Y which also has 100 students. The Librarian sees that we have two copies which covers the Course Y students, and ignorant of the Course X requirements does not acquire any more copies. The end result is…

                        • Lists will automatically be added to the list owner's "My Lists" tab

Many of my academics are forgetting/not realising that they need to add lists into "My Lists". This is especially an issue after rollover when they are attempting to edit lists from previous years instead of the current one. They expect the lists that they own to automatically appear in "My Lists", which I probably would if I were them too! Is there any chance this could be possible? It would make my academics' lives a lot easier and avoid some frustrations and confusions with the system.

At present clicking on 'recent changes' shows the name of the list, the date, what was added. It would be very useful to see the email address of who actually published the list to keep track of activity.

We’ve already started some improvements to expose more information in ‘Recent Changes’ e.g. item added/removed info. To address this idea, we can currently only expose the list publisher where that user has a public profile. We would like to change the meaning of private profiles, to mean private to the institution so that we can display this information to logged in users for all lists. Does anyone have any objection to this?

                            • Allow the images of book covers to appear in the actual reading list

In the detailed display there is a small image of the book. One of our student reps is asking for this to be displayed in the actual list as a visual prompt to the book they should be reading. Given we have dyslexic students and many in design related subjects who are visual learners, the more visual the lists could be the better.

                              • Export bibliography in list order (not alphabetical)

We would like to be able to export a reading list in a bibliographic citation format but keeping the list structure, e.g. week one, week two etc. The current export options are 'export to PDF' which only lists title/author and doesn't contain the full bibliogaphic detail, or the 'view bibliography' button which lists everything alphabetically by author.

Our academics need to add reading list content to their printed course outlines so we need to be able to export reading lists from Aspire into the course outline, with a 'week by week' structure where appropriate. Many academics are understandably extremely reluctant…

                                • Include "Editor" in the front screen list view

At the moment, there is no distinction between editors and authors when you bookmark an item - both are labelled as "Author" in the initial metadata. If you edit the metadata to describe an editor as "Editor", that information no longer appears in the front screen list view. We would ideally like the bookmark button to be able to distinguish between the two when bookmarking (as MARC does with the 100/700 field distinction) and we would like Editors to appear in the front screen list view to improve the information available to students in support of good citation practices.

                                  • quick links to resources?

The details page for a resource is sometimes great (e.g. when there is a google books preview, inline viewer, or a student wants to annotate the list, plus the clear statement of library holdings...) but sometimes it's just an unnecessary click e.g. linking to a website.
Also, nothing opens in a new window so it can (sometimes) be a pain to get back into aspire again once you've followed a link to an external resource.

What are your thoughts on a lightbox to view details pages for resources?

Or perhaps a new window could be opened when you leave talis…

We are looking to bring the list and list item view together which should alleviate this issue.

                                    • Streamline route through to online books, journals etc.

Clicking on a title of an item takes users to a page about that resource rather than the resource itself. For online items this is a pain and I've seen staff and students be completely put off by this (especially when most of the list contains online items). They don't notice the 'online resource' button to the right of the screen. They think it's an icon not the shortcut link they're looking for. I would much prefer the 'view in library catalogue'/ability to add notes etc. page to be the secondary link. This type of info should open in a…

We have some ideas about a new approach to display of list item details which may address this.

However, this is not currently in our near term development focus so it has been moved to the longer term backlog.

Ideas may be graduated from the backlog as we get through the ones that are planned.

                                      • Suggested improvements to My Notes & Reading Intentions

The summary list of "my notes" and "my reading intentions" displayed on one's username profile page do not expire or archive. Further they seem disorganised and are without a date stamp to indicate when a note was left. Instead the lists grow to contain notes and data from every old list. The lists would get very long and disorganised due to intentions and notes left from past reading lists, leading the profile summary page to become of little use to students.

For the My Notes and Reading Intentions sections, I recommend:
                                        1) sorting (e.g. by date);
                                        2) display the date…

Improving this for students is something we would like to do, but is likely to need a theme in this area.

This is not currently in our near term development focus so it has been moved to the longer term backlog.

                                        • Removal of duplicates from bibliography

When you view list as bibliography it duplicates references where there are multiple bookmarks for the same item. It would be good to remove these duplicates so that if necessary academics can quickly produce a bibliography if necessary without having to edit it.
